Chapter 106: Elron Rain
Chapter 106: Elron Rain
"You’ve worked hard, Harrison." Harrison’s father, the head of the Rain family, Elron Rain said as he looked fondly at his youngest son.
"F-father, what are you doing here?" Harrison said with a nervous smile as his father smiled before sitting down on a chair and pointing at another one for Harrison to sit at.
Upon sitting down, Harrison nervously gulped before looking at his father. The man had been a mystery of sorts to Harrison ever since he was young. It wasn’t only him that thought so, but all of his siblings as well.
It wasn’t as if their father was never there, on the contrary, they would always have at least dinner together every day, except for the days when their father was too busy to even eat or was out of the city.
He never ignored any of them, nor did he show any favorability toward one of his children, he wasn’t cold, but he wasn’t warm either. It was a respectful type of relationship that had been fostered between them, one that although wasn’t really normal, wasn’t that far from a normal relationship that a father had with his children.
Still, none of them knew anything about their father.
What sorts of things did he like, did he have any hobbies, did he love a particular meal more than others, did he hate any type of food?
They knew none of that, as their father had never really had any heart-to-heart conversations with any of them, not even once.
He would ask how their day went, if they did anything great, or if they had a problem with something, sometimes he would even help them out, but those times were very rare.
To this day, Harrison, the one that had placed spies around the empire and knew more than his siblings when it came to the different noble houses and the people in them, had no idea what his father was like.
He didn’t know if he was a cold person generally, maybe he was even warm with others when he was alone.
Did he have a temper?
Was he cool-headed?
Things that one would quickly learn about a person were simply not present when it came to his father. He was like an otherworldly being that stood above all for even his own children.
"My son has suddenly become a Silver Knight and is using a device that is masking every trace of his power, why wouldn’t I get interested in something like that?"
"I would say that it would be weird if I didn’t come to talk to you after seeing that," Elron said with a wry smile as Harrison let out a sigh of defeat.
"So you were able to sense it after all."
"Of course, perhaps those that had just stepped in the Titled Knight realm would have been unable to sense exactly what was up with you, but almost all Titled Knights and archmages could see through the device you have."
"So, you have finally decided to compete against your siblings, have you?"
Harrison simply nodded at his father, fully aware that he would be unable to lie to the man in front of him. As a Titled Knight that has been in the realm for a decade, his father was one of the most powerful people in the entire empire, one whose every move could create a storm in the empire.
"You used the system to heal your condition?"
"Yes, it turned out that there was a cure for my condition, now I am able to wield mana and use it as others."
"For you to actually reach the realm of a Silver Knight so quickly, you had help from that Golden Knight that arrived with you in the carriage?"
Harrison’s eyes constricted as he stared at his father in shock. The man merely chuckled before looking at Harrison with a calm smile on his face.
"Don’t act so surprised, I was able to sense him ever since you guys got a mile within the range of the castle, every Titled Knight and archmage would have been able to do the same."
"You have researched a lot about the different realms of power that exist, but those above the Golden realm are things that are hard to get any information about, so it is only natural that you assumed that you would be fine as long as you got the man to leave before reaching the castle gate."
"The truth is, the difference between the realms is very different when one gets to the Golden Knight realm, since things connected to the realms above the Golden realm are kept safe and secret, it is only natural for you to be unable to assume correctly."
"Seeing as how those three didn’t accompany you, I take it you have sent them somewhere to start another plan of yours, haven’t you?"
"After all, a lot of your little ’spies’ have made their way to the city, so I can only assume you have a plan that you are working on."
Harrison’s body started shaking slightly. Every word his father said made him understand that everything he had done, all the things he thought were done in secret, without anyone else knowing, were laid bare to his father.
His spies, the one thing he had made sure that nobody knew about, was something his father already had full knowledge about. Even though he allowed his children free reign and the opportunity to do whatever they wanted to, as long as it isn’t against the family, he of course kept notes and made sure to know what they were doing at all times.
"It seems that father already knows everything," Harrison said with a defeated sigh as he smiled weakly at his father.
"So what is next, father?"
"Are you going to order me to stop whatever I am about to do, do you wish for me to continue laying low and never trying to compete against my siblings, always being the weakest, most pathetic child of the Rain family?" Harrison grit his teeth as he said so, he had always been the one with no talent, the one child that was destined for failure.
He was constantly teased by his siblings and even though they made sure never to show it, the servants didn’t have a good impression of him either. Some felt sorry for him, others were even slightly angry at the worthless child that had been given everything simply by being born in such a powerful noble house. Jealousy was always present, but Harrison always acted as if he never noticed their gaze, never wanting to stir up any trouble.
He was tired of it, he was tired and angry at being looked at as the worthless child of the family. Even though he initially never wanted to take the responsibility of being the duke and wielding so much power, after being the one at the very bottom of his family, his thoughts changed.
Perhaps it all started when the system arrived. He immediately went out and started killing monsters with the help of his servants, and after seeing that his condition was getting better, his mind started changing.
He had finally cured his condition and reached level 1 when the merchant that had stolen the goods from Orsted arrived, only for him to be left disappointed after seeing that they had been stolen.
He wanted power, he wanted to be a person that everybody looked up to, as much as he didn’t want to admit it and say he was one that wanted to live a carefree life without having any responsibilities, he actually yearned for them now.
Beating his siblings, the ones that always thought he was worthless and would never be able to compete against them would be the first step, and what a wonderful step it would be, seeing the defeated faces of the four that never imagined that the youngest amongst them, the one that everyone thought was worthless, was simply hiding his strength and biding time to show himself to the world.
"No, I will not ask that of you." Harrison’s father said calmly as Harrison blinked at him several times in quick succession.
"You won’t?"
"Why should I tell you to not do something you obviously have been waiting to do for so long?" Harrison’s father said as a ferocious smile suddenly appeared on his face.
"That expression you made when you asked me that question, reminds me of a hungry beast that had been left to starve for far too long, an expression that I have not seen from a person for a long time, especially not from someone that has been born a noble."
"I want to see what you will be able to do, how you are planning on making up for the lost time, how you would raise your strength and backing to a level that is above your siblings."
"But remember this, my son." Harrison’s father suddenly went back to his old, cold self.
A dense killing intent was suddenly released by him and bore down on Harrison.
"If you do anything to harm the family, or your siblings directly, then I will not show you any mercy, am I understood?"
"Y-yes, father."
